"The D U T C H like their interiors bright and tidy, spotlessly clean, a quality which was observed by foreign travellers even during the Golden Age. As a consequence, interiors that have stood the test of time are rarer than one might think, especially privately inhabited rooms, and the few obsessed people who retain such interiors are becoming rarer by the year. One such kindred soul is a 82-year-old fellow madman, a Classical musician who inhabits an incredible house in the centre of Utrecht, whose acquaintance we made today, becoming instant friends. Over the last fifty years he almost singlehandedly restored the place, rescuing it from total demolition in the annus horribilis 1970, a work of true passion and dedication. Shown here is the "Zaal" with its wacky and humongous Rococo fireplace, embers smouldering away, while a gentle breeze streamed in through double doors opening to a delightful town garden. The walls are covered with original c.1730 "behangsels" in a huge Baroque pattern, gleaming in the half dark, uncovered by our host himself from underneath layers of wallpaper, a virtually unique survival. During the 1770s, the house was inhabited by Hieronymus van Alphen, author of the illustrious Dutch verse "Jantje zag eens pruimen hangen, o! als eieren zo groot", which I will not even attempt to translate, and indeed the "behangsels" include painted versions of this very fruit, the "pruim", or plum. We spent four hours in this room today, and it swept me away completely, ranking among the most magical spaces in the whole of the land in my humble opinion, and in fact I would be perfectly happy spending the rest of my life in this very Zaal. Such rooms are so incredibly fragile and rare, dear friends, and the coming months will be among the most dangerous this room has ever seen, as the house has just been put onto the market - one can only hope some enlightened soul will be its new occupant, who will value and cherish this absolute gem of a house and will not designify it all" via @markbroch
